Getting from Belgrade Airport into the city

Belgrade's Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) sits about 18 km west of the centre, and you have four sensible ways into town: the free city buses, the paid A1 minibus, an official taxi on the voucher system, or a ride-hail app. Here's an answer-first comparison of each — how it works, what it costs as of 2026, and how to avoid the airport's taxi touts.

What's the best way from Belgrade airport to the city centre?

The short answer: if you want free, take bus 72 to Zeleni Venac in the centre. If you want fast and cheap with luggage room, take the paid A1 minibus to Slavija for about 400 RSD. If you want door to door, use the airport's official voucher taxi (a fixed fare, no meter haggling) or a ride-hail app like Yandex Go or CarGo — there is no Uber or Bolt in Belgrade. A direct airport–city train is under construction but not yet running as of mid-2026.

First, the basics

Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) sits about 18 km from the city centre, and a typical road journey takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. To put that in orientation terms, the centre is roughly 17–19 km away by road via the E75 motorway and the Gazela bridge: Republic Square and Knez Mihailova (the old-town core) are about 18 km out, Slavija Square (where the A1 minibus ends) a similar distance, and Zeleni Venac (where bus 72 ends) likewise central. The four sensible ways into town are the free city buses, the paid A1 minibus, the official voucher taxi, and an app-based ride. Is bus 72 to the city centre free, and where does it go?

Yes. Since 1 January 2025, all regular Belgrade city public transport has been free for every passenger — no tickets, fares or validation on regular lines. That makes the airport buses free to ride. This is the current policy as of 2026, but a fare policy is perishable and could change, so confirm before you rely on it.

Three lines serve the airport:

  • Bus 72 runs Airport → New Belgrade → Zeleni Venac, a central downtown terminus just below Knez Mihailova and Republic Square. The stop is directly outside the terminal, and the trip typically takes 35–50 minutes depending on traffic. It is the workhorse airport-to-city-centre bus. A night variant, 72N, serves Republic Square.
  • Bus 600 runs Airport → New Belgrade → Beograd Centar ("Prokop") main railway station, taking roughly 30–45 minutes. This is the best option if you're connecting directly to trains.
  • Bus 607, reported as serving the airport plus parts of New Belgrade and Banovo Brdo, is useful mainly if you're staying in western riverside neighbourhoods rather than the old centre. It is also free as part of the regular network.

The trade-off versus the paid A1 minibus is that bus 72 makes more stops through New Belgrade and Surčin, so it is the slower of the two into the centre, and it has no dedicated luggage racks. If you are travelling light and want to spend nothing, it is the obvious pick.

You may still see older guides and videos quoting small cash bus fares (for example 45–150 RSD). Those predate the 2025 free-transport policy and are now outdated — don't treat any per-ticket bus fare as current.

What is the A1 minibus, and how much does it cost?

The A1 shuttle minibus runs Airport → Fontana (New Belgrade) → the main bus and rail area → Slavija Square, with limited stops, which makes it faster into the centre than bus 72. Slavija is a transport hub within walking distance of Vračar, the St. Sava Temple area and many hotels. A1 is a separate paid service — the exception to the free regular transport.

The fare is commonly quoted at about 400 RSD (a little under 4 EUR), paid in cash, in dinars (RSD), on board — so have local cash ready, as cards are not the norm. The journey is around 30–40 minutes. Some earlier sources quote lower fares (200 RSD), which suggests a gradual increase, so treat it as low single-digit euros in cash and check the current price rather than assuming a fixed figure. The A1 timetable runs across the day; departures are roughly hourly but vary, so check the posted schedule at the airport stop. As of 2026 this remains the cheapest paid option and the quickest budget route into the centre.

How much is a taxi from Belgrade airport, and how does the voucher work?

Nikola Tesla Airport runs an official fixed-price taxi system to prevent overcharging. You obtain a voucher from the airport e-kiosks (there are several in arrivals) or the TAXI INFO counter, showing a fixed fare by destination zone; the driver must charge only that amount. With voucher in hand, go to the first official taxi in the queue in front of the terminal — queue-skipping is not permitted. A voucher covers up to four passengers and normal luggage.

Fares to the city centre by voucher are most commonly reported around 2,200–3,500 RSD (roughly 19–30 EUR at recent rates) for the central zone, with outer destinations costing more — non-official zone tables suggest a wider 20–90 EUR range across the city. The official airport pages give the mechanism, not specific figures, so treat any euro figure as approximate and read the posted zone table on arrival.

One stable warning: aggressive unlicensed taxi touts operate in the arrivals hall despite the voucher system, something the airport operator has acknowledged. They will approach you before you reach the kiosk and quote inflated flat fares. Use only the official TAXI INFO desk and the marked taxi rank, get your voucher first, show it to the driver before you set off, and ignore unsolicited offers.

Is there Uber in Belgrade, or which ride-hail apps work?

Belgrade has no Uber or Bolt. The main app-based options are Yandex Go (Yango), which operates in Serbia with upfront fare estimates and card or cash payment, and CarGo, a local Uber-like platform. Classic licensed-taxi dispatch apps such as Pink Taxi and Belgrade Taxi also exist. These can be cheaper than the voucher taxi and let you pay by card, but you'll need a working data connection on arrival to order one.

CarGo's regulatory status has been contested over the years, but it continues to operate in practice and is popular for car quality and transparent pricing. Exactly which apps run and under what legal framework can change; the broad pattern — no Uber or Bolt, with Yandex Go and a local app present — is stable in the short term.

When will the airport train to the city open?

A new dual-track electrified passenger rail line of about 18.3 km is under construction, branching from the Belgrade–Novi Sad corridor at Zemun Polje and connecting the airport with the National Stadium and Expo site at Surčin. The planned BG Voz stopping pattern is reported as Prokop (Beograd Centar) → New Belgrade → Tošin Bunar → Zemun → Altina → Zemun Polje → Singidunum → Belgrade Airport → Surčin → National Stadium. The airport station will sit about 500 m from Terminal 1.

Nine new EMU trains for the BG Voz line have been ordered from CRRC, with delivery reported to run from late 2025 into March 2027, testing of the line expected to begin around January 2027, and an operational launch reported for spring 2027 — in time for Expo — with an airport–centre journey of roughly 15–20 minutes. These dates are provisional, not settled, and should not be relied upon as an opening date.

What's still unknown: the ticketing regime for the rail link has not been announced — whether rides will be free under the city's free-transport policy or carry a special airport surcharge is not yet specified.
