Belgrade explained

Specialised Expo

A Specialised Expo is a BIE-recognised international exposition built around a single declared theme, lasting up to three months — the category Expo 2027 Belgrade belongs to, distinct from the larger, broader Universal (World) Expos.

Specialised Expo — Belgrade glossary

What Specialised Expo means

The word "Expo" covers two officially different categories. A Universal, or World, Expo is the larger, broader-scope event, traditionally held over roughly six months around a wide-ranging theme, and staged only every few years. A Specialised Expo is narrower and shorter: it runs for up to three months, is built around one specific, focused theme, and is held in the years between the larger World Expos, giving mid-sized host cities and themes their own dedicated stage.

Both categories are sanctioned by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the Paris-based intergovernmental body that recognises and oversees official expositions, and a host country must have its Specialised Expo formally recognised by the BIE before it can proceed. Expo 2027 Belgrade holds that recognition, and it runs for 93 days, from 15 May to 15 August 2027, under the theme "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All."

What makes Expo 2027 notable within its category is that it's the first Specialised Expo ever held in the Western Balkans, and it has already drawn a larger number of participating countries than the previous Specialised Expo host, Astana 2017 — a genuinely significant milestone for the format, not just for Serbia.

Common questions about Specialised Expo

What is a Specialised Expo?

A BIE-recognised international exposition that runs for up to three months around a single declared theme — narrower in scope and shorter in duration than a Universal (World) Expo, and held in the years between them.

How is a Specialised Expo different from a World Expo?

A World Expo is broader in theme and traditionally runs about six months; a Specialised Expo is built around one focused theme and runs for a shorter period, up to three months, as Expo 2027 Belgrade does over its 93 days.

Is Expo 2027 Belgrade a Specialised Expo?

Yes — it's officially recognised by the BIE as a Specialised Expo, running 15 May to 15 August 2027 under the theme "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All," and it's the first Specialised Expo held in the Western Balkans.
