What Ada Ciganlija means
- In Serbian: Ада Циганлија
- Pronounced: A-da tsi-GAN-lee-ya
- Category: Places
Ada Ciganlija is a river island on the Sava that was connected to the bank and dammed to create an artificial lake, Savsko jezero. It is Belgrade's most popular outdoor recreation spot, and locals affectionately call it "Belgrade's sea" (Beogradsko more) because of its long pebble-and-grass beaches and swimming water close to the city.
In summer it draws huge crowds for swimming, sunbathing and watersports. Around the lake there are walking and cycling paths, cafés and bars, and facilities for activities ranging from kayaking and paddleboarding to bungee jumping. It functions as a green escape from the city heat and is easy to reach from the centre.
Outside the swimming season it remains a pleasant place to walk, run or cycle, with forested paths around the water. For visitors in the warmer months, it is the obvious place to cool off without leaving Belgrade.
