- River & position: Right (Belgrade) bank, on the high ground above the Sava–Danube confluence

- Municipality: Stari Grad
- Best for: first-time visitors, sightseeing on foot, short city breaks
What Stari Grad is like
Stari Grad ("Old Town") is the historic core: Habsburg-era facades, the Knez Mihailova promenade, Republic Square, and Kalemegdan park wrapped around the Belgrade Fortress. It is the most walkable, most sightseeing-dense part of the city, and the part visitors picture when they imagine central Belgrade.
Because it is the centre, it is also the busiest and, in peak season, the priciest. Streets near Republic Square and Skadarlija can be lively late into the night, so a room on a quieter side street is worth asking for.
Who should stay here
A good fit if you want: first-time visitors, sightseeing on foot, short city breaks.
Maybe look elsewhere if you're after: travellers who want quiet at night, budget-only stays in high season.
Getting around
Almost everything central is on foot. City buses, trams and trolleybuses have been free for all passengers since 2025, and the airport bus and taxis reach the centre easily.

Common questions
Is Stari Grad a good area to stay in Belgrade for the first time?
Yes — it's the most convenient first base. You're within walking distance of the fortress, the main promenade and most central sights, and it's easy to manage in English. The trade-off is that it's the busiest and often the most expensive part of the city.
Is Stari Grad noisy at night?
It can be, especially around Republic Square and the Skadarlija dining street. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room on a courtyard or quieter side street rather than facing a main square.
